Have you outgrown your shared hosting?

17 August 2015

Is it time to upgrade your shared hosting plan to a more powerful solution?

Shared website hosting is great for people hosting personal blogs or lower traffic websites or startup businesses. With lower costs than running your own server, a shared hosting platform gives you the opportunity to get online quickly and easily.

However, once you have been up and running for a while you might start to feel like your website isn’t performing as it once did. Your customer database has now reached tens or hundreds of thousands and the website takes longer to load…..

When should you consider upgrading your hosting?

Hopefully your website is generating an income for you which is a reflection of the increased website traffic you are getting. All this extra traffic will potentially start to slow down your site so it no longer loads in a few seconds. There are methods for improving load times that a good web hosting provider will be able to recommend such as reverse caching proxies but these will only last so long.
A better option is to upgrade your web hosting to allow your website to consume more resources. Being on a shared hosting platform essentially means you are sharing all of the servers resources with every other website on that server. Hopefully you do not have a web host who loads up many thousands of websites to the same server which makes resources even more scarce.

What is a Virtual Private Server?

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) provides you with a small piece of dedicated server hardware to use as you need (subject to fair usage). This means within a dedicated server you have your own slice (virtual server) with its own dedicated resources. Any website that you host on your virtual server will not be impacted by the resources being used by someone else virtual server.

A few benefits of VPS hosting:

  • Virtual servers are low cost compare to purchasing dedicated hardware so it provides a business with a low entry price to controlling their own virtual server
  • Virtual servers have RAID disk arrays - essentially this means that if a disk fails on the main server hosting your virtual server there is no impact as it is setup to allow for disk failures.
  • You can choose your exact specifications from operating system to disk space and CPU & RAM allowing you to maximise your virtual server environment.
  • Your virtual server can be upgraded quickly and easily usually with just contacting your hosting provider. Need more RAM to help speed up your website or perhaps more CPUs? - No problem!
  • Running your VPS can seem daunting to start with but we can help you out or offer advice if needed.
